March Book Club

Calling all bookworms! This book club meets at Dirt Coffee on the last Monday of the month. All are welcome, regardless of whether or not you choose to read the book, and participants recieve Happy Hour pricing of alcohol plus 10% off all other food and beverages!

Join us on Monday, March 25th from 5:30-7pm for a discussion of The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai!

---

"In 1985, Yale Tishman, the development director for an art gallery in Chicago, is about to pull off an amazing coup, bringing in an extraordinary collection of 1920s paintings as a gift to the gallery. Yet as his career begins to flourish, the carnage of the AIDS epidemic grows around him. One by one, his friends are dying and after his friend Nico's funeral, the virus circles closer and closer to Yale himself. Soon the only person he has left is Fiona, Nico's little sister.

Thirty years later, Fiona is in Paris tracking down her estranged daughter who disappeared into a cult. While staying with an old friend, a famous photographer who documented the Chicago crisis, she finds herself finally grappling with the devastating ways AIDS affected her life and her relationship with her daughter. The two intertwining stories take us through the heartbreak of the eighties and the chaos of the modern world, as both Yale and Fiona struggle to find goodness in the midst of disaster."

Live Music with John Moss

JohnMoss, based out of Denver, Colorado is an independent songwriter who "has consistently produced music that pushes comfort out of the way" to deliver gut-smashing honesty and lead lines to its niche listeners.

Driven by lyrical melodies in the likes of Mutemath, Muse, Colony House, and Sufjan Stevens, JohnMoss has risen in peoples music catalogue as music's PB&J equivalent:

Nothing fancy or flashy, just consistent and delicious. And once you've had some, it probably will be in your lunch(boom)box consistently. Johnmoss is currently working on his 3rd full length album, entitled The Death of Me, due out January 2019.

Live Music with Victor Towle

The MIND combines elements of classic, psychedelic rock with 70's style funk and acoustic folk to form it's unique signature sound. Vintage instruments, such as Hammond Organ, Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Steinway Grand Piano, and distorted, tube amplified Stratocaster electric guitar combine with funky synthesizers, modern vocal recording techniques, and special effects to provide a unique twist to familiar sounds. Ripley's Southern roots and Towle's Chicago roots, are evident throughout The Mind's songs which are then mellowed by mutual Colorado experience. In "Down the Line," The Mind is comfortable exploring a number of musical genres which at times makes them hard to classify, yet strong rock roots provide a solid thread throughout their work.

In October we will be discussing A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza.

This book follows the lives of an Indian-American Muslim family, as they gather together in their Californian hometown to celebrate the eldest daughter, Hadia’s, wedding. This is also the day that Amar, the youngest of the siblings, reunites with his family for the first time in three years. Rafiq and Layla must now contend with the choices and betrayals that lead to their son’s estrangement - the reckoning of parents who strove to pass on their cultures and traditions to their children; and of children who in turn struggle to balance authenticity in themselves with loyalty to the home they came from.
