June Book Club

Calling all bookworms! The Dirt Book Club meets on the last Monday of every month, and you are welcome to join us whether you've read the book or not! For June we will be discussing The Book of Essie by Meghan Maclean Weir.

"Esther Ann Hicks--Essie--is the youngest child on Six for Hicks, a reality television phenomenon. She's grown up in the spotlight, both idolized and despised for her family's fire-and-brimstone brand of faith. When Essie's mother, Celia, discovers that Essie is pregnant, she arranges an emergency meeting with the show's producers: Do they sneak Essie out of the country for an abortion? Do they pass the child off as Celia's? Or do they try to arrange a marriage--and a ratings-blockbuster wedding? Meanwhile, Essie is quietly pairing herself up with Roarke Richards, a senior at her school with a secret of his own to protect. As the newly formed couple attempt to sell their fabricated love story to the media--through exclusive interviews with an infamously conservative reporter named Liberty Bell--Essie finds she has questions of her own: What was the real reason for her older sister leaving home? Who can she trust with the truth about her family? And how much is she willing to sacrifice to win her own freedom?"

Live Music with Isabelle Stillman

Live Music with Isabelle Stillman

Isabelle Stillman is a singer-songwriter living in Denver, CO. She grew up in St. Louis, MO, where she learned how to play guitar and discovered her love of music. Her family was her first musical influence; The Dixie Chicks and Jerry Jeff Walker were the soundtrack to her upbringing, and the love, joy, and thoughtfulness of her mom, dad, brother, and sister made her into the person she is today.

Isabelle has been a reader and writer all her life, eating up books since she could turn a page and churning out stories since she could hold a pencil. But it wasn't until she graduated and moved to Colorado in 2017 that she started to combine her love music with her love of words. Writing songs quickly became a passion - a source of reflection, comfort, and a deeper sense of self, which was crucial in her first few years living on her own.

Songwriting was also a gateway to a strong music community in Denver. Isabelle honed her writing craft while learning about production at CCM Studios with her mentor and producer, Darren Skanson.

Isabelle's music weaves a tapestry of her love of family, the confusion of growing up, the reality of being a woman in our society, and her captivation with words. Her style explores many genres, encapsulating her growth as an artist and a person. Her work is both personal and universal, catchy and poignant.

Isabelle has released four singles, and her first full album will be out in July of 2019. She is embarking on a 20+ date national tour this summer. Check her out at https://www.isabellestillman.com/

May Book Club

Calling all book worms! Join us on the last Monday (Tuesday, this month) of every month for a discussion of a recent fictional novel.

PLEASE NOTE: This month we will be meeting on the last Tuesday, as Monday is a holiday.

For April we will be discussing The Astronaut Wives Club by Lily Koppel. Description below.

"As America's Mercury Seven astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, television cameras focused on the brave smiles of their young wives. Overnight, these women were transformed from military spouses into American royalty. They had tea with Jackie Kennedy, appeared on the cover of Life magazine, and quickly grew into fashion icons.

Annie Glenn, with her picture-perfect marriage, was the envy of the other wives; JFK made it clear that platinum-blonde Rene Carpenter was his favorite; and licensed pilot Trudy Cooper arrived with a secret that needed to stay hidden from NASA. Together with the other wives they formed the Astronaut Wives Club, providing one another with support and friendship, coffee and cocktails.

As their celebrity rose-and as divorce and tragedy began to touch their lives-the wives continued to rally together, forming bonds that would withstand the test of time, and they have stayed friends for over half a century. THE ASTRONAUT WIVES CLUB tells the story of the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history."

Live Music with Emma Hill

Live Music with Emma Hill

In early 2007 fate brought Emma Hill and Bryan Daste together via a Craigslist ad. Daste was a recording engineer at Magic Closet Studios in Portland, OR, and Hill had come in to record her first professional demos after a recent move from her home state of Alaska. Nearly twelve busy years, six well-received albums, and countless tour miles later, they are back with the release of their 7th studio album, Magnesium Dreams. While writing songs that are emotionally charged and lyrically focused has always been Hill’s passion, with Dreams she has pushed her boundaries with genre, vulnerability, and writing style more than ever before.

These days Emma resides in Anchorage, Alaska, while Bryan still calls Portland home. The pair have most recently completed a tour around the western US states. The release of their new album, Magnesium Dreams, proves that the duo are still going strong and pushing creative boundaries, weaving together songs with sonic dreamscapes, Parisian jazz, and indie pop ballads into a single cohesive work. Critics have compared the duo to Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and they are known for being some of the hardest working touring artists in the circuit.

From her roots of growing up in the small Alaskan village of Sleetmute to her worldwide travels, Emma has worked hard to secure a name for herself as a force in the music world. Splitting her time between tour and working within the local Anchorage music scene, she’s shown her dedication to keeping music alive wherever she goes. With the addition of Daste’s expansive talent, the pair have consistently produced music that speaks to the soul. With the release of Magnesium Dreams it feels like the duo is making a definitive statement.

April Book Club

Calling all book worms! Join us on the last Monday of every month for a discussion of a recent fictional novel. For April we will be discussing The Map of Salt and Stars by Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar. Description below.

"In the summer of 2011, just after Nour loses her father to cancer, her mother moves Nour and her sisters from New York City back to Syria to be closer to their family. In order to keep her father’s spirit as she adjusts to her new home, Nour tells herself their favorite story—the tale of Rawiya, a twelfth-century girl who disguised herself as a boy in order to apprentice herself to a famous mapmaker.

But the Syria Nour’s parents knew is changing, and it isn’t long before the war reaches their quiet Homs neighborhood. When a stray shell destroys Nour’s house and almost takes her life, she and her family are forced to choose: stay and risk more violence or flee across seven countries of the Middle East and North Africa in search of safety—along the very route Rawiya and her mapmaker took eight hundred years before in their quest to chart the world. As Nour’s family decides to take the risk, their journey becomes more and more dangerous, until they face a choice that could mean the family will be separated forever."

Book Club participants receive 10% off their order and will have the opportunity to choose future reads.

---

"In 1985, Yale Tishman, the development director for an art gallery in Chicago, is about to pull off an amazing coup, bringing in an extraordinary collection of 1920s paintings as a gift to the gallery. Yet as his career begins to flourish, the carnage of the AIDS epidemic grows around him. One by one, his friends are dying and after his friend Nico's funeral, the virus circles closer and closer to Yale himself. Soon the only person he has left is Fiona, Nico's little sister.

Thirty years later, Fiona is in Paris tracking down her estranged daughter who disappeared into a cult. While staying with an old friend, a famous photographer who documented the Chicago crisis, she finds herself finally grappling with the devastating ways AIDS affected her life and her relationship with her daughter. The two intertwining stories take us through the heartbreak of the eighties and the chaos of the modern world, as both Yale and Fiona struggle to find goodness in the midst of disaster."

Live Music with Victor Towle

The MIND combines elements of classic, psychedelic rock with 70's style funk and acoustic folk to form it's unique signature sound. Vintage instruments, such as Hammond Organ, Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Steinway Grand Piano, and distorted, tube amplified Stratocaster electric guitar combine with funky synthesizers, modern vocal recording techniques, and special effects to provide a unique twist to familiar sounds. Ripley's Southern roots and Towle's Chicago roots, are evident throughout The Mind's songs which are then mellowed by mutual Colorado experience. In "Down the Line," The Mind is comfortable exploring a number of musical genres which at times makes them hard to classify, yet strong rock roots provide a solid thread throughout their work.
